Finding Joy and Healing: Why Disneyland is My Sanctuary

I believe that everyone, not just those battling cancer, should prioritize travel and activities that bring inner joy. For much of my life, I focused on making others happy—be it partners, parents, or employers. However, after receiving my cancer diagnosis, I hit rock bottom and decided to turn my life around by living for myself. As a self-proclaimed Disney Adult, this means frequent visits to Disneyland, "The Happiest Place on Earth."

Many people misunderstand Disney Adults, often labeling us as odd or claiming that Disney is just for kids. They could not be more wrong. Jodi Eichler-Levine, a professor of religious studies, eloquently said, "Don't judge Disney adults. Try to understand them." For me, Disneyland's charm lies in its nostalgic power and the magic I always find there. One example is my first vacation to Disneyland with my now-husband. At the time, I had just left a very emotional and mentally damaging relationship and needed an escape. Booking a trip to Disney was the perfect remedy, and that was ten wonderful years ago. Since then, we still go to Disneyland as much as we can afford, cherishing each visit and the joy it brings. My husband is also a “Disney Adult”

Visiting Disneyland also has tangible benefits for my well-being. The physical activity from walking around the park keeps me fit, and the joy of reliving my childhood moments significantly reduces my stress levels. As someone who has struggled with severe anxiety, finding natural ways to alleviate stress is invaluable. Scientific studies support this, too. According to a 40-year survey of the European Society of Cardiology, participants who took more than three weeks of vacation annually had a 37% lower risk of dying. This compelling evidence motivates me to pack my bags and head to Disneyland as often as possible.

In summary, prioritizing activities that bring joy, such as traveling to Disneyland, is vital for both mental and physical health. This approach is especially important for those facing serious health challenges, but it is a philosophy that everyone can benefit from. Embracing what makes you happy enriches your life and boosts your overall well-being. So, whether you are a Disney Adult or have another passion, make time for it and live life to the fullest—after all, it’s backed by science.
